Arouca Geopark

Arouca Geopark is a project that aims to protect and enhance Arouca’s internationally recognized geological heritage. With 41 identified geosites and a territorial development strategy, it offers various attractions, such as the Geosites Route and the Arouca Walking Route Network.

In addition, local operators organize tours that allow you to explore small picturesque villages, natural wonders such as waterfalls, and observe herds of goats, sheep and the typical Arouca breed of cattle up close. For the more adventurous, there is also the option of canoeing or kayaking down the Paiva River.

Paiva Walkways and Bridge 516 Arouca

The Paiva Walkways are one of the biggest tourist attractions in Arouca and the whole country. This 8 km walking route is located on the slopes of the left bank of the River Paiva, linking the river beaches of Areinho and Espiunca.

The most recent attraction of the Paiva Walkways is the 516 Arouca Bridge, one of the largest suspended pedestrian bridges in the world, 516 meters long and 175 meters high. The crossing is made on a metal railing deck with a side guard.

Serra da Freita

Serra da Freita is an unmissable destination in the region, home to 17 of Arouca Geopark’s 41 geosites. The pure mountain air attracts everyone who passes through, leading them to explore paths that lead to historic sites such as the Mamoa da Portela da Anta.

From afar, you can see small villages embedded in the landscape and, up close, witness phenomena that are unique in the world, such as the Pedras Parideiras. The impressive Frecha da Mizarela waterfall is breathtaking, and for the more adventurous, the mountains offer adventure sports and various hiking trails.

Arouca Monastery

The Monastery of Arouca was a convent that housed nuns for centuries. During the guided tour, you’ll learn about the history of the monastery, its connection with Queen Santa Mafalda and the daily life of the nuns in its cloisters.

Don’t miss a visit to the Museum of Sacred Art, where you can see a valuable collection of liturgical objects and other priceless treasures.

Ecovia do Arda

Located in the heart of the Arouca valley, the Ecovia do Arda crosses six parishes in the region, always following the path of the River Arda. Almost 11 kilometers long, the route can be walked or cycled, revealing along the way life in the valley and its valuable natural and cultural heritage, deeply linked to agricultural work. Along the way, information panels allow you to explore the geology, biodiversity and history of this area, which is part of the UNESCO Arouca Geopark.

Traditional Villages

Arouca’s traditional villages, built of granite or schist, preserve ancient traditions and enchant visitors with their rich heritage, magnificent landscapes and the simple, warm hospitality of their inhabitants. There are countless trails to explore, whether on foot, by car or by bicycle, which connect these villages. Let yourself be enveloped by nature, enjoy the scent of wild flowers, taste the typical dishes of the region and enjoy every moment.

Gastronomic Experience

Arouca is a true paradise for lovers of Portuguese gastronomy. Here, meat is the star: Arouquesa veal, Gralheira kid and Alvarenga steaks are the highlights of the local cuisine. The region’s vinho verde wines complement the meal, which ends in style with regional and convent sweets.

Fans of conventual sweets will be delighted with the local delicacies. The nuns of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Arouca left a legacy rich in flavors, such as sweet chestnuts, manjar de língua, roscas and almond cigars, morcelas doces and bola de S. Bernardo. In addition, the traditional sweets include cavacas, sponge cake, melindres and the curious “pedras parideiras”.
